Use and End of Life Stages in Material Assessments

Reporting B1-B8 and C1-C4 data for a complete whole-life carbon view.

ORIS Material Assessments include an optional Use and End of Life step that allows you to record B1-B8 and C1-C4 lifecycle stage data alongside the product and construction stage results already captured in your assessment. This article explains how the step fits into the assessment workflow, how to enter data, how to document assumptions, and how results are presented in the reporting dashboard.

Where This Step Fits in the Workflow

The Use and End of Life tab appears as an additional step at the top of the Material Assessment workflow, after the Bill of Quantities and sourcing evaluation. It is optional: if you do not need to report on use and End of Life stages, you can proceed directly to the Results dashboard without completing it. The step becomes available once you have defined your Bill of Quantities. The entry point differs depending on how transportation has been configured:

  • If you selected the manual distances approach, in the Bill of Quantities you can click View Results to go directly to the Results dashboard, or click Next Step to open the Use and End of Life tab.
  • If you define supplier-based transportation, in the Site Selection you can click View Results to go directly to the Results dashboard, or click Next Step to open the Use and End of Life tab.

 

Entering Use and End of Life Data

On the Use and End of Life tab, you enter values for each module across two stage groups: the Use stage (B1-B8) and the End of Life stage (C1-C4). These values typically come from a specialist assessment or an internal calculation methodology. ORIS provides a place to consolidate that data with the product and construction stage results already held in the platform, giving a single source of truth for whole-life carbon.

Two input methods are available:

  • Manual entry: type values directly into the input fields for modules within the tab.
  • Bulk upload: download the pre-formatted template, populate it externally, and upload it to fill in all values at once

 

Adding Assumptions and Notes

The Use and End of Life tab includes dedicated fields for documenting the assumptions behind your inputs. You can record notes at two levels:

  • Stage-level notes: add a general assumption or methodological note that applies to an entire lifecycle stage.
  • Module-level comments: click Add comment next to any individual value field to attach a note to a specific module.

These notes are saved with the assessment and remain accessible from the dashboard, providing an audit trail for the data and supporting methodology documentation.

 

Reporting Dashboard

When Use and End of Life data has been entered, the Results dashboard expands to cover the full lifecycle. A toggle section appears below the KPI cards, letting you select which view to explore.

PRODUCT AND CONSTRUCTION STAGE

This view contains material-level breakdowns of carbon footprint, cost, and material quantities. Select Product and Construction stage from the toggle to access it.

USE AND END OF LIFE STAGES

Select Use or End of Life stage to see the project totals for B1–B8 or C1–C4, respectively. This view shows aggregated values across the whole assessment rather than per-material breakdowns, reflecting how the data is typically sourced and reported.

ASSESSMENT SUMMARY

The Assessment Summary brings together all lifecycle stages in a single overview, covering product and construction, use, and end of life. When Use and End of Life data has been entered, this becomes the default view when you open the Results dashboard.

Dashboards on Projects only Covering Product and Construction Stage

Assessments containing only A1–A5 data continue to use the existing Product and Construction stage view. The new Use and End of Life step on the Material Assessment extends the existing workflow by adding support for whole-life carbon, while preserving the current experience for product and construction stage assessments.
